If you love easy, elegant desserts that taste like sunshine in a spoon, you’re going to adore this lemon posset. This traditional British treat dates back to the 16th century and is a wonderfully simple way to end any meal on a bright, creamy note. We first had it at a Jane Austen inspired Tea Party, and we were hooked! I couldn’t wait to get home and recreate it!

Posset is basically a creamy custard made by gently curdling cream with lemon juice and sugar. No eggs, no fuss. The result is silky smooth, tangy, and just the right balance of sweet and tart. It’s perfect served in little jars or glasses, topped with a twist of lemon zest or fresh berries for a pop of color. We’ve had it on top of a raspberry jam / preserves, and it was delicious!
Why I love lemon posset:
- Ready in under 15 minutes
- Only 3 main ingredients : cream, sugar, lemon
- No baking required
- Light but indulgent enough to impress guests
Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- ¾ cup sugar
- 6 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- Zest of 1 lemon
Instructions:
- In a saucepan, combine cream and sugar. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring often.
- Let it bubble for about 3 minutes.
- Remove from heat, stir in lemon juice and zest.
- Pour into ramekins or glasses and chill at least 3–4 hours (overnight is best).
- Serve as is, or top with berries/shortbread if you’re feeling extra Bake-Off fancy.
Serve this dreamy dessert after a Sunday roast or alongside afternoon tea. It’s simple, satisfying, and a perfect way to bring a bit of British charm to your table.
