Some recipes are more than just ingredients and instructions. They’re memories. Traditions. The taste of love passed down through time. This frosting was one of those for me.
Every year on Poppy’s birthday, my Nana would make him a German chocolate cake from scratch. It was his favorite, and it was her labor of love. I can still see her at the stove, gently stirring the pot, the scent of sweet coconut and toasted pecans filling the kitchen. She poured it warm over a sheet cake, always with a little smile, like she knew just how much it meant.
Now, every time I make this, I feel a bit closer to both of them .. as if love really can live on through food.
From my Nana’s kitchen to yours, I hope this frosting brings warmth, sweetness, and a little memory of your own.
Nana’s German Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- ½ cup butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1⅓ cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla.
- Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is melted and thickened — about 10–12 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans.
- Mix well, then frost your cake.
Nana poured hers over the cake while it was still warm — it seeped into every bite and made the whole thing magical. You can do the same, or let it cool to frost a layer cake.
